Misc Updates

August 31, 2026

Recently a friend pointed out that the GitHub Student Developer Pack includes 6 months of free subscription to master.dev, which was previously Front End Masters. I have been watching Brian Holt's React course, and plan to watch more advanced React and then Next.js courses afterwards.

I haven't been working on my project management tool for a couple months. I'm not sure if I should potentially extend it to have a Kanban board. The free hosting was only free for a short period of time and that trial has run out, so now I would have to pay to host it live. I may just run it locally and grab some screenshots to show off for now.

I've been asked to build another web-based project, a replacement for a local app that manages computer hardware inventory. It requires scanning QR codes and inputting data about the hardware, and associating pieces of hardware with a "build" which is essentially a system. It currently uses a .ini file for drawing out the forms and a sqlite database holds all the hardware details. I thought I'd built it with Next.js as a learning experience but I'm wondering if that's really necessary. I have free reign to build it with technologies I want as long as they're web-based. I am currently refreshing React skills before learning Next.js. I did spend about 5 months in a machine learning program last year and learned some Python, but still feel my JavaScript is strongest, along with TypeScript. I may just build the project with a NodeJS API so there isn't as much to learn to get it built.

I am currently in a bookkeeping program and have been since May. I completed the first semester and am about to start the second, to get a better understanding of what businesses care about and what is important to them. I've also joined the Conestoga Entrepreneurship Collective Gig Lab, in order to get mentoring and guidance on building a freelance business in web development. I'm really excited about the program and finding freelance work as a developer.
